How does it work
There are five key functions included on the Portical Platform:
- Aggregate
- Categorize
- Geo-Tag
- Score
- Curate
Aggregate
The platform will aggregate RSS newsfeeds from a variety of sources. It will poll the newsfeeds at a defined time interval (e.g., hourly) and will scrub these feeds to remove any duplicates. If there are data deficiencies (e.g;, publication date), these deficiencies are resolved.
Categorize
Each newsfeed is compared against a number of profiles to establish the relevancy of each newsfeed. Each newsfeed will be attached to the appropriate profile to categorize the news item. This categorize allows the newsfeeds to be associated with specific profiles and the forums that encapsulate these profiles.
Geo-Tag
The platform will geo-tag each newsfeed item to establish the geographic relevancy of the item. The geo-tag will scan the text do determine the country and region associated with the newsfeed item. A variety of techniques is used to complete the geo-tagging.
Score
Each newsfeed item is scored according to the relevancy to the profiles that are associated with the newsfeed. Each profile associated with the newsfeed increases the score. The platform supports baseline scoring for each item based on how the administrator determines the relevancy. The platform also allows each registered user to customize the scoring to suit their specific interests.
Curate
The platform allows the daily newsfeed to be promote to a single newspage that highlights the newsfeeds with the highest scores. Once these items appear on the main newspage, the items can be adjusted to improve the placement of these items. The graphic images that have been selected for each newsfeed can be replaced with new images. The size of these images can be be adjusted.

Portical News Page
The Portical news page displays the top 10 news items on a single news page. The newsfeed items are selected based on the score that has been determine by the smart content engine.
The administrator can adjust select alternative images for each posted item and adjust the size of newsfeed image.
Other Newspage Services
The Portical newsfeed can be directed to other newspage services as with the Paper.li news platform.
The Paper.li news platform can provide a presentation layer for the Portical RSS newsfeed. The Portical RSS newsfeed can be combined with other RSS newsfeeds.
Customized RSS Feeds
There are a large number of RSS Feed readers that provide capabilities to read and present RSS feeds.
Regular users can read the baseline RSS feeds from the Portical platform. These feeds include complete data that can be processed by other platforms.
Registered users can read their customized RSS feeds into other RSS feeder platforms.
